2008 Thuglak conference – Modi Speech

May 17, 2011 Leave a comment

Every year the magazine ‘Thuglak‘ organizes their reader conference where current political and social issues are discussed and its editor Mr. Cho Ramaswamy gives satirical yet thought provoking answers to select viewers questions. (To the best of my knowledge it is the only magazine in India that conducts a conference every year for its readers). The conference also has a guest speaker. In the year 2008 Mr Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat was invited to speak. I had seen the video on DVD when I was in India in the summer of 2008, it was impressive. Last night my wife found the you tube links of Mr Modi’s speech. It is a six part video that every Indian needs to lend his/her ears to no matter what your political affiliations are.

Part1 , Part2 , Part 3 , Part 4 , Part 5 , Part 6

In a country where in some states even simple decisions as to traffic lane changes have to be decided by the courts and bureaucrats are elected officials don’t mind cherishing their  romancing their connections in the movie bigwigs functions and penning poetry it is refreshing to see a man accomplish the job he was elected for and does it with a strong conviction.

– Extra ordinary accomplishments are born from great ideas which arise from a clear vision.

Thanks for your time and spl thanks to youtube and the person who posted this video on youtube.

The Gold Standard

As with everything things don’t get the stamp of authenticity until the US okays it. Its official thanks to wikileaks “Mr Narendra Modi is incorruptable”

Even US knows I’m incorruptible: Narendra Modi on WikiLeaks

US shouldn’t preach human rights: Modi

GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday used the latest WikiLeaks disclosures to pat himself on the back, saying “Now even the US knows that I am incorruptible”.

Reacting to the recent WikiLeaks disclosures in which a top US consular official described him as a “non-corrupt and efficient administrator”, Modi told reporters on the sidelines of an event this proved his credentials.

“WikiLeaks shows two faces – one that of the government of India and the other of progressive Gujarat,” the chief minister said.

In the latest leaked diplomatic cables accessed by The Hindu newspaper, Michael S. Owen, the US consul general in 2006, wrote to the US State Department that they might have to reassess the Gujarat chief minister, whose visa they revoked due to his alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Owen also said that Modi could emerge as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s next national leader.

“Modi has successfully branded himself as a non-corrupt, effective administrator, as a facilitator of business in a state with a deep commercial culture, and as a no-nonsense, law-and-order politician who looks after the interests of the Hindu majority.

“Modi’s backers in the BJP now hope to convince the party leadership that he can use these positive traits to attract voters throughout India. Some BJP leaders believe, or hope, that voters will forget or forgive Modi’s role in the 2002 bloodshed, once they learn to appreciate his other qualities,” Owen wrote in his assessment.

Modi said he met Owen in Mumbai, where they discussed Gujarat.

Recalling his meeting with Owen, Modi said: “I looked into his eyes and said, ‘do not preach… I am a son of India, I know what human rights violations you have done’. Good that the dialogue has been faithfully reproduced.”

The Gujarat chief minister also said he that “government of India should address the issue of American interference” in Indian affairs.

Endorsements

While politicians and commentators across India continue to portray an anti-muslim and anti-minority image for Mr Narendra Modi, there are some prominent leaders from the minority who are coming forward with the facts. Here is an excerpt from TOI.

New Deoband chief lauds Modi’s Gujarat

Yagnesh Mehta, TNN, Jan 19, 2011, 01.31am IST

SURAT: The new Darul Uloom vice-chancellor, Maulana Ghulam Mohammed Vastanvi, said “all communities” are prospering in Narendra Modi’s Gujarat and there was “no discrimination against the minorities in the state as far as development was concerned.” He was talking to TOI here on Tuesday.

This is arguably the most significant endorsement of Modi. Darul Uloom, based in Deoband in Uttar Pradesh, is a leading Islamic seminary in India and the fount of the Deobandi thought, which has adherants well beyond the country’s borders, especially in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Vastanvi, himself a Gujarati from Surat, is an MBA graduate and has been instrumental in introducing modern subjects in institutions run by Darul Uloom in Gujarat and Maharashtra, including medicine, engineering and allied subjects. His recent election as the Darul Uloom chief is seen as a possible change catalyst in this conservative seminary.

It’s not easy for the man holding this chair to be charitable towards Modi, the person who has been accused of persecuting Muslims during and after the 2002 Gujarat riots. Asked about the riots, Vastanvi didn’t give Modi a clean chit, but stressed that it was now time to move on.

“The issue is almost eight years old now and we should move forward,” Vastanvi told TOI on Tuesday. “Rioting anywhere — in Gujarat or in any other part of the world — is bad for humanity and it should never happen. Gujarat riots were a blemish for India and all culprits should be punished.”

Vastanvi said “there are not as many problems in Gujarat as has been projected.” Asked about justice for the Gujarat riot victims, he said the riots had worsened “because the police did not act due to political pressure during those days”.

But he differed with what many activists working among the riot victims or the UPA government at the Centre claim about continuing discrimination against Muslims in Gujarat. He said, “As far as relief work riot is concerned, it has been carried out very well by government and people of Gujarat.”

The Deoband chief has obviously been impressed by the economic progress of Gujarat. He said, “Development has undoubtedly taken place in Gujarat and we hope it will continue. I ask Muslims to study well. The government is ready to offer jobs (to them), but for that, they need good education.”

Vastanvi hails from Vastan village near Surat and his initiation into Islamic studies began at a seminary here.

CWG -> CWS

September 23, 2010 1 comment

I definitely thought until a few days ago that the CWG news reports should not be politicized. But looking at the kind of attitude and level of accountability shown makes one think  Has CWG gone from ‘Common Wealth Games‘  to Country Wide Shame‘.  I do think in the process of the games preparation there are several  good things Delhiites have got infrastructure wise  but the real problem is that there has been no one person who has complete responsibility for this. It seems to look like a classic case of too many cooks running around and only half the work gets done that too with poor quality. I think the whole thing would have been a lot different if it had a CEO like person who can get hands on with the project and do it with pride. Guess who comes to mind – Mr Narendra Modi. I say this not because I am his fan but with the level of leadership and commitment he has shown to the projects in Gujarat.

BJP wins Kathlal by-polls on Modi”s birthday

Ahmedabad/New Delhi, Sep 17 (PTI) BJP today broke into the Congress bastion bagging the Kathlal assembly seat for the first time in five decades winning the by-poll, giving Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi a victory gift on his 61st birthday. Kanu Dabhi won by over 21,000 votes defeating his nearest Congress rival Ghelabhai Zala. Dabhi got 62,120 votes while Zala polled 40,573 votes. With this win, the strength of BJP in the 182-member state assembly increased to 122. The main opposition Congress has 54 MLAs while others hold six seats. Savouring the victory, Modi utilised it to fire a salvo at the Congress, saying “people have defeated every conspiracy of Congress and CBI.” “This is people’s support for the development oriented politics,” Modi told reporters in Gandhinagar shortly after his party’s win in the by-election necessitated due to death of sitting Congress MLA Gautam Zala. “Even the Congress and the CBI together, could not defeat BJP in what was considered a Congress bastion,” he said. Modi himelf noted that the BJP has never won a seat from Kathlal. Those indulging in secular vote bank politics have been given a befitting reply by the people of Gujarat, Modi said. “It(victory) has come from an area which is represented by two Central ministers. Clearly people have rejected the Congress,” he added. Kathlal is in Central Gujarat’s Kheda district which is represented in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister Dinsha Patel. The adjacent Anand parliamentary constituency is represented by another Union Minister Bharat Solanki. In New Delhi, BJP hailed the win as “a complete rejection of Congress-CBI alliance” by the state voters. “The Congress-CBI alliance and misuse of CBI in Gujarat has been completely rejected by the people of the state,” BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitaraman told reporters in New Delhi in an apparent reference to the arrest of Modi’s close aide and former state Home Minister Amit Shah by CBI in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case. “It is a slap on the face of Congress for trying all kinds of methods including misuse of CBI to gain politically in a state which they have been repeatedly rejected,” she said, hailing her party’s victory in the Congress bastion as “historic”. BJP supporters across Gujarat celebrated the birthday of Modi and the victory in Kathlal distributing sweets and burning fire crackers. BJP has never been able to win from Kathlal in the Assembly since formation of a separate Gujarat state in 1960 Modi previously has targeted CBI and the Congress over the arrest of Shah. Today’s victory is expected to be a big boost for BJP coming just ahead of elections to six municipal corporations scheduled to be held on October 10.

Time value of Modi

March 23, 2010 2 comments

You might have heard of ‘Time value of money’ in finance that really puts a value to the every hour minute and second spent in terms of money, you might have also see politicians spending their time opening restaurants, governors spending their precious time in attending movie felicitations or even Chief Ministers spending their time writing poems and attending weddings at the expense of the tax payer money. When was the last time we saw a Chief Minister in India charging money for a good cause to attend any non-governmental event ? Here is Mr. Narendra Modi setting another precedent. Details below

Courtesy of Economic Times

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, who knows that he is a crowd-puller, has been cashing in on his celebrity status, literally.

Like Bollywood stars, getting Modi to attend functions comes at a cost. A big difference, however, is that Modi uses his ‘‘celebrity appearance fee’’ for a cause.

So, even as his detractors slam him for hogging the limelight, Modi’s office has collected Rs 23 crore in the past five years just from his public functions. A large chunk of these funds have been diverted to Kanya Kelavani Nidhi, created for educating the girl child in Gujarat.

While a major part of the sum comes from donations, considerable amounts are also raised from auctioning gift articles which Modi has received. A part of the collections also goes to the CM’s Relief Fund, which saw inflow to the tune of Rs 104 crore ever since Modi took over the reins.

A Gujarat-based corporate house, which recently invited Modi to inaugurate its facility, donated Rs 11 lakh to CM’s fund. The amount depends on the paying capacity of the organizers. Modi inaugurated about 20 such events in January 2010 alone and presided over hundreds of such events in the past five years.

‘‘He started the practice in 2006. The donation is voluntary,’’ said a CM aide. Officials do, however, size up the paying capacity of the organizers and drop hints about what should be the amount of donation. A lot of scholarships to bright girl students and bonds worth Rs 1,000 each to help support the education of lakhs of girls have come out of this fund.

First Post!!

December 24, 2009 Leave a comment

This is my first post. Even though Mr Modi has been known as a phenomenon in Indian politics for the last several years I still feel there is a need to educate the Indian and Global audience on some of Mr Modi’s accomplishments and also show what the rest of Indian political establishment across party lines can learn from Mr Modi. I feel privileged to share some some of my thoughts on this. Sincere thanks to WordPress!
